Inpatient Teen Mental Health Care

The goal of inpatient treatment for children and adolescents is to effectively deal with an immediate crisis, reduce symptoms of psychiatric disorders, develop more appropriate behaviors and boundaries, and learn effective coping and social skills. Our trauma-informed staff focuses on empowering adolescents to:

Behaviors That May Require Inpatient Psychiatric Care

If children or adolescents are a danger to themselves or others, they may need short-term hospitalization. Psychiatric or emotional disorders which may necessitate hospitalization include:

  • Active suicidal ideation
  • Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency
  • Recent History of Significant Self-Mutilation or Self-Endangering Behavior
  • Trauma
  • Severe Anxiety
  • Assaultive or Aggressive Behavior
  • Severe Depression and Hopelessness
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Psychotic Behaviors Impacting Daily Activities

San Antonio Adolescent Mental Health Program Details

Every adolescent mental health treatment plan includes a comprehensive assessment, group therapy, medication management, detox (if necessary), and a family therapy session. Discharge planning is initiated at the time of admission and revised throughout the time of hospitalization.

A written aftercare plan is developed with the participation of the adolescent and family before release from San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. This includes recommendations for further treatment, as well as educating family members and loved ones how to support the patient in normal life. To ensure continued support and care, follow-up appointments are also scheduled as needed.
